Every painting project has its own story, and for this home in the Forest Ridge Neighborhood in Hayden, Idaho, the biggest challenge wasn’t the painting itself, it was the schedule.
The homeowners were preparing to host a backyard barbecue and wanted the entire exterior completed before family and friends arrived. With rain in the forecast, there wasn’t much room for delays. Rather than pushing the project back, we adjusted our schedule, brought in additional crew members, and worked around the weather to make sure everything was finished on time without sacrificing quality.
The homeowners also wanted to give their Craftsman-style home a more modern, updated look while preserving the character that made it unique. To help bring that vision together, they worked with Cathy from Hue Color & Decor, who recommended simplifying the exterior by using one consistent body color across the siding, window trim, door trim, and corner boards. The result is a cleaner, more contemporary look that still feels warm and timeless.
The project included a complete exterior repaint of the siding, fascia, soffits, gutters, downspouts, garage doors, trim, corner boards, and exterior doors.
The Color Palette
For the main body of the home—including the siding, soffits, window trim, door trim, and corner boards—the homeowners selected Sherwin-Williams Urbane Bronze. This rich, earthy color gives the home a sophisticated Northwest feel while highlighting the beautiful stonework and architectural details.
To create subtle contrast, we custom matched a darker color to the home’s interior trim and used it on the garage doors, fascia, gutters, and man doors. Instead of using a standard off-the-shelf paint color, this custom match created a seamless transition between the interior and exterior and gave the home a truly custom appearance.
The simplified color palette makes the home feel more cohesive while adding depth and dimension through carefully placed darker accents.
Our Process
As with every exterior painting project, preparation came first. We pressure washed the home to remove dirt, dust, and loose paint before moving into the detailed prep work. Sanding, caulking, masking, and spot priming are all part of the process, and they’re often what determine how well a paint job performs years down the road. Taking the time to properly prepare each surface creates a smoother finish and helps the paint stand up to Hayden’s changing weather and North Idaho’s four distinct seasons.
For the exterior, we used Sherwin-Williams Emerald Exterior Satin, one of our preferred products for exterior house painting in Hayden and the surrounding Coeur d’Alene area. It provides excellent durability, rich color retention, and long-lasting protection against sun, snow, rain, and seasonal temperature swings.
One detail that made this project unique was converting several stained exterior doors to a painted finish. Rather than simply painting over the existing stain, the doors were carefully prepared using a shellac-based bonding primer before being finished with Sherwin-Williams Emerald Urethane. The result is a smooth, durable finish that blends beautifully with the updated exterior.
Final Results
One of the things we’re most proud of on this project wasn’t just the finished product—it was being able to deliver it on schedule. By adding painters to the job and carefully working around the rain, we were able to complete the project before the homeowners’ barbecue so they could enjoy their newly refreshed home with family and friends.
The transformation feels subtle in the best possible way. Using Urbane Bronze across the siding, trim, and corner boards modernized the home without taking away from its Craftsman character. Pairing it with the custom-matched darker accents on the garage doors, fascia, gutters, and man doors added depth and gave the exterior a polished, custom look.
