Dark exterior colors continue to be one of the most popular trends in home design, and this Coeur d’Alene exterior painting project is a perfect example of why. The homeowners chose Sherwin-Williams Peppercorn as the primary body color, giving their home a bold, modern appearance while still blending beautifully with the surrounding pine trees and natural landscape.
This project included a complete exterior repaint of the home, including the lap siding, fascia, soffits, gutters, garage doors, downspouts, trim, and architectural details. One unique aspect of the project was the addition of new bat and board siding on the south side of the home, giving part of the exterior an updated architectural look before painting began.
Project Overview
The homeowners wanted a dramatic update that would give the house a more contemporary feel without changing its overall character. Peppercorn was the perfect choice. It’s a rich charcoal gray with warm undertones that creates plenty of contrast while still feeling timeless.
To help the darker body color stand out, the soffits, fascia, and gutters were painted in a contrasting color, creating crisp rooflines and adding depth to the home’s architecture. The combination gives the exterior a clean, custom look that feels right at home in North Idaho.
Our Process
Every exterior painting project starts long before the first coat of paint goes on. We began by pressure washing the entire home to remove dirt, debris, and loose material so the new coatings would properly bond to the surface.
Next came the preparation work. We sanded rough areas, caulked joints and trim, spot primed exposed wood, and carefully masked windows and surrounding surfaces. Proper preparation is what allows an exterior paint job to last, especially in Coeur d’Alene where homes experience snow, rain, hot summers, and freezing winters every year.
For this project, we used Sherwin-Williams Emerald Exterior Satin, one of the highest-quality exterior paint systems available. Emerald is known for its exceptional durability, rich finish, and resistance to fading, cracking, and peeling, making it an excellent choice for homes throughout North Idaho.
As part of the project, the south elevation received new bat and board siding before painting. Once installed, it was carefully prepped and coated to match the rest of the home, creating a seamless transition between the new and existing exterior. We also paid special attention to the soffits, fascia, and gutters, which were finished in a contrasting color to frame the home and complement the bold Peppercorn siding.
Final Results
The transformation is striking. Sherwin-Williams Peppercorn gives the home a sophisticated, modern look while still feeling warm and inviting. The contrast between the dark siding and lighter trim details highlights the home’s architecture and dramatically improves its curb appeal.
With the updated bat and board siding, crisp trim lines, and premium Sherwin-Williams Emerald finish, the home now has a custom appearance that’s built to stand up to the Inland Northwest climate for years to come.
Projects like this show how much impact the right color choice can have. A bold color doesn’t just change the appearance of a home—it can completely redefine its style while adding value and long-term protection.
